Trump Imposes New Tariff on the World Following Supreme Court Defeat

Trump to Continue Tariffs Following Supreme Court Ruling

President Donald Trump announced on Friday his plans to extend tariffs, despite the Supreme Court’s recent decision that ruled against the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The Court, in a 6-3 vote, determined that Trump had overstepped his authority under this act.

In response to the ruling, President Trump expressed support for Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Brett Kavanaugh, who dissented. He then declared a 10% tariff on all imports, emphasizing the importance of trade practices. “This decision confirms that foreign nations can set various trade restrictions with the United States,” he said. He criticized previous administrations for failing to protect U.S. interests, pointing out historical trade deficits with certain countries.

Trump stated that this ruling affirms the power to impose further tariffs, asserting that “we can use other statutes, other customs authorities,” which have also been verified as permissible.

During an event in the Rose Garden on April 2, Trump first introduced tariffs as a way to address trade imbalances, but later announced a pause on these measures a week later. Despite this temporary suspension, subsequent court rulings were unfavorable.

“All national security tariffs under Section 232 and existing Section 301 tariffs are now effective and will remain fully enforced,” Trump noted. “Today, I’m signing an order for a 10% global tariff under Section 122, in addition to existing tariffs. We are also launching investigations under Section 301 and other statutes to guard against unfair trade practices by other nations and businesses. Thank you for your attention to this issue.”
