Trump Imposes Sanctions on Palestinian Authority and Prevents Officials from Attending UN Meeting on 'Palestinian State'

President Trump’s administration has imposed sanctions on the Palestinian authorities and the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) due to their efforts to pursue statehood without a formal agreement with Israel, as dictated by U.S. law.

This has been a longstanding U.S. policy, as outlined in the Middle East Peace Commitment Act and other regulations, which require Palestinians to respect agreements for negotiation with Israel rather than seek unilateral actions.

Despite this, the Palestinian leadership has sought to isolate Israel through international organizations and has attempted to gain unilateral recognition for a Palestinian state through those same channels.

Recently, countries such as France, the UK, and Canada have announced their intention to recognize the Palestinian state at the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York City.

Trump described this move as “a reward for fear” and warned of potential retaliatory trade measures against Canada. His administration has also proceeded to impose sanctions on the Palestinians.

The State Department communicated to Congress that, under the PLO Commitment Compliance Act of 1989 and the Middle East Peace Commitment Act of 2002, the PLO and Palestinian Authority have violated their commitments. They have been accused of supporting terrorism, which includes inciting violence through educational materials and providing financial support to Palestinian terrorists and their families. Consequently, the U.S. has restricted visas for PLO members and PA officials as per these laws, asserting that it’s vital for national security to hold them accountable for their actions that jeopardize peace.

This visa ban means that Palestinian officials will be unable to attend the UN General Assembly, where their national declaration was anticipated.

The Trump administration has actively called for these legal measures against the Palestinians. In a notable previous move, they closed the PLO office in Washington in 2018 after the PLO initiated proceedings against Israel at the International Criminal Court.
