Trump Signals Potential Meeting with New York’s Mayor-Elect
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – On Sunday, President Donald Trump suggested that he might meet with Zoran Mamdani, New York City’s incoming mayor, to “work something out.” This comes amid a tense political relationship between the Republican president and the Democratic rising star, who have often clashed.
For months, Trump has been vocal in his criticism of Mamdani, branding him a “communist” and asserting that the election of the democratic socialist would lead to chaos in New York.
The president has even gone so far as to threaten to deport Mamdani, who is a Ugandan-born naturalized citizen, and to withhold federal funds from the city.
Mamdani, once an obscure state lawmaker, has emerged as a social media sensation and a symbol of resistance against Trump throughout his mayoral campaign.
He ran on a platform filled with progressive policies and explicitly challenged Trump’s hardline, anti-immigrant agenda from his second term.
At 34, Mamdani gained broad support, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo by nearly 9 percentage points.
During his victory speech on election night, Mamdani stated his intention for New York to exemplify how to overcome the president’s influence.
However, the following day, he indicated his readiness to “stand up to President Trump” once he takes office in January, while also expressing a willingness to collaborate with anyone, including the president, if it benefits New Yorkers.
Mamdani’s team did not provide an immediate response to Trump’s remarks, but a spokesperson highlighted the importance of their relationship with the White House, stating they would reach out as it’s vital for the city’s success.
Trump echoed this sentiment, telling reporters, “The mayor of New York wants to meet with us. We’re going to work something out,” as he prepared to head back to Washington after a weekend in Florida.
After Trump’s comments, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt clarified that while he did reference Mamdani, no meeting date had yet been established.
Additionally, Trump mentioned that the U.S. may soon consider discussions with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro concerning military developments in the region, stating, “I’m willing to talk to anybody.”
