Trump Signs Executive Order to Expedite Psychedelic Drug Research

On Saturday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at speeding up the review process for certain psychedelic drugs that have already received Breakthrough Therapy designation from the FDA.

“The executive order I’m signing today is, well, it’s a significant step,” Trump mentioned. “These treatments are in advanced stages of clinical trials to ensure their safety and effectiveness for patients in the U.S.”

The order aims to implement major reforms to accelerate access to new medical research and treatments involving psychedelic drugs.

Highlighting the concerning suicide rates among veterans, Trump noted, “Many of these experimental treatments show life-changing potential, especially for those suffering from severe mental illness and depression, including our veterans.”

He added, “We’re doing this early, but research has been ongoing for a while. With initiatives like these, results often go unrecognized. But now, we’re changing that.” The executive order seeks to eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic barriers, enhance data sharing between the FDA and the Department of Veterans Affairs, and encourage the swift reclassification of FDA-approved psychedelic drugs.

According to a Stanford University study, in 2024, a group of 30 veterans with traumatic brain injuries underwent ibogaine treatment, which is worth remembering. Trump mentioned that these veterans experienced an 80 to 90 percent reduction in their depression and anxiety symptoms in just one month.

Trump also shared that Republican leaders in Texas have already pledged $50 million for ibogaine research. “And today, the federal government is investing another $50 million in research, which was just approved last night,” he stated.

Additionally, he said, “We are also creating pathways for ibogaine to be offered to critically ill patients under the principle of justice.”

“This order will finally give those struggling with debilitating conditions a chance to reclaim their lives and live them more happily,” he concluded.
