Toxic substances were deliberately discharged at the ice rink outside the Trump Kennedy Center, causing significant damage and leading to the cancellation of a scheduled performance, government officials stated on Friday.
“Today, the Trump Kennedy Center fell victim to an outrageous act of vandalism,” remarked Roman Daravi, the vice president of public affairs for the venue in Washington, D.C.
“Our outdoor spaces were contaminated with toxic chemicals, resulting in severe damage,” Daravi added. “We cannot condone violence and hatred in the heart of America’s culture.”
“Authorities are looking into this matter, and those involved will face the consequences.”
Images shared with the Post depict a gallon-sized water jug positioned amid a dark substance spread over the rink.
The exact nature of the brownish-black chemical remains unclear. The incident took place early Friday morning and is currently under investigation by the U.S. Park Police.
The ice rink was established by Le Patin Libre, a Canadian artistic skating organization, with performances slated through Sunday.
This destructive act forced the cancellation of Friday night’s planned performance. Daravi mentioned that the Trump Kennedy Center is “working diligently” to fix the damages in hopes of resuming weekend performances as scheduled.
“This is profoundly disappointing and unnecessary,” expressed Richard Grenell, director of the Trump Kennedy Center.
He further accused Democrats of pressuring artists to cancel performances, claiming they constantly attack the center.
“This is a coordinated effort,” he asserted. “Now, mentally unstable individuals are reacting and wreaking havoc on the center.”
Grenell also noted that the renowned venue has faced serious threats and ongoing harassment, urging “reasonable Democrats” to intervene before the violence escalates.
The center has dealt with a spate of performance cancellations recently due to President Trump’s attempts to replace the former leader’s name with his own on the building.
Earlier this month, Trump announced that the venue would shut down for two years starting on July 4 for extensive renovations.
