Trump Critiques Democrats’ Affordability Message

Former President Donald Trump has criticized the Democratic Party’s emphasis on “affordability,” labeling it a “false narrative” that “means nothing to anyone.” Speaking at his administration’s final Cabinet meeting of 2025, Trump remarked, “I inherited the worst inflation in history. There was no affordability. Prices were extremely high.” He went on to dismiss the term “affordable” as a deception perpetuated by Democrats.

This Cabinet meeting marked the ninth of Trump’s second term, equaling the total number conducted by President Joe Biden in his four years in office.

Interestingly, the recent focus on affordability played a significant role in multiple high-profile Democratic wins in the 2025 election cycle. Notably, Zoran Mamdani, a candidate from the Socialist Party, won the New York mayoral race, while Democrats captured the gubernatorial positions in both Virginia and New Jersey.

According to a recent Fox News Voter Poll, New Jersey voters highlighted the state’s high taxes as a major concern, reflecting wider economic worries. In Virginia, half of the voters identified the economy as their top issue—significantly more than those who prioritized healthcare. And in New York City, affordability stood out as the most pressing concern, according to earlier polling data.

Amidst these developments, left-wing Democrats and Republicans are vying for positions in Tennessee’s state legislature. The Democratic candidate, dubbed “Tennessee AOC,” is gaining traction in this traditionally Republican stronghold.

During the Cabinet meeting, Trump expressed frustration over inheriting what he called “the worst inflation in history” from the Biden administration. He claimed his own administration was working hard to bring prices down through extensive deals with foreign industries and smart tariff approaches to tackle the trade deficit.

“Right now, the price of energy is really going down, the price of gasoline is really going down. And when it goes down, everything falls,” Trump argued. However, he reiterated that Democrats’ claims of affordability are misleading, suggesting that such messaging distracts voters from the reality of economic struggles.

In Tennessee, Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and other key Republicans are rallying support for congressional candidates aligned with Trump. Matt Van Epps will be competing against Democratic Congressman Aftin Behn, who draws comparisons to progressive figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

This special election aims to fill the seat of Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Green, who stepped down in July. Historically, Republicans have won such positions with relative ease, but recent Democratic successes have lent them newfound momentum.

Johnson stepped in to headline some rallies in Tennessee, as Trump promoted attendance and urged voters to reject Behn. “The whole world is looking at Tennessee right now, and it’s watching this district,” he noted during a call.

Polls indicate a potentially close race between Van Epps and Behn, setting the scene for the midterm elections in 2026. Behn has also made affordability a central theme of his campaign.

On social media, Behn has shared sentiments reflecting the struggles of many voters: rising food costs and health care expenses. He mentioned that this election presents an opportunity to demand change from those in power.

As prominent figures like Ocasio-Cortez and former Vice President Al Gore lend their support to Behn, Tennessee could become a focal point for a broader contest between traditional Republican candidates and those promoting progressive economic ideas.

When asked about the effectiveness of both parties’ messages surrounding affordability, the White House maintained that Democrats lack authority on this issue. White House Press Secretary Khush Desai stated, “The idea that Democrats, who spent four years creating the worst inflation crisis, have a strong stance on affordability is quite humorous to Americans who recall how Trump’s policies led to job growth and economic prosperity.”
