Trump Marks Progress on Affordability Issues
President Donald Trump is reflecting on advancements regarding the affordability crisis since he took office in January 2025.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump celebrated the first anniversary of Election Day 2024, noting his clear win against former Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Happy anniversary! One year ago today, November 5th, we achieved one of the greatest presidential victories in history. It’s a true honor to represent our country,” he stated, emphasizing the “booming” economy and the decline in costs.
“Our goal is to ensure things are affordable,” Trump added. “Much love to the American people!”
Costs, in fact, have decreased considerably since President Trump succeeded former President Joe Biden, who faced record-high gas prices. In summer 2022, egg prices peaked at an average of $5.016, a staggering 147 percent increase, alongside soaring inflation. Reports indicated that, by November 2023, the average American household required an additional $11,434 annually just to maintain their previous standard of living.
In contrast, Trump’s administration has managed to lower living costs in various areas, and inflation has decelerated more than anticipated. It’s worth noting that inflation during Biden’s presidency peaked above 9%, the highest in over 40 years.
Gasoline prices also hit record highs; however, recent figures indicate that they have finally dropped, with the national average at $3.079 as of Wednesday—significantly lower than the peak prices seen during Biden’s time in office.
Moreover, mortgage rates have been on a downward trend since January, while rental costs are growing at the slowest rate in over four and a half years.
The Trump administration successfully avoided major tax increases with a significant bill that included exemptions for tips, overtime, and Social Security—leading to pay increases as indicated by White House announcements. “The typical hardworking family’s take-home pay has risen by more than $10,000 a year,” it was stated.
Food prices, particularly eggs, created various concerns during Biden’s presidency, as reports noted rising costs in essential categories affecting consumers heavily. While food prices had been relatively stable until late 2023, they have since resumed their upwards trend, coupled with a rise in gasoline costs this month, even though they remain below previous year levels.
However, it appears that prices for essential goods, including eggs, are now declining—a topic that gained attention over the summer.
Reports from that time highlighted a significant drop in raw egg prices, which fell in June for the third time in four months by over 20%. Since February, egg prices have plummeted by 61.2%, a remarkable contrast to the 227.1 percent increase observed during the final days of Biden’s administration.
Other staples, such as butter, ice cream, fresh fruits, and cereals, have also seen price reductions.
A notable example of this change is Walmart’s announcement regarding its annual Thanksgiving meal basket, priced at under $4 per person this year. According to Breitbart News, this marks the “lowest price since the retailer started the program in 2022” during the Biden administration.
The Thanksgiving bundle is designed to serve 10 people, featuring over 20 items, including traditional favorites like stuffing, cranberries, green beans, dinner rolls, and pumpkin pie ingredients—along with a 13.5-pound Butterball turkey available at 97 cents per pound. All of this comes in for less than $40.
For comparison, prices shot up to about $7 per person last year.
This situation arose following New Yorkers’ choice to elect a mayor who backed state-run grocery stores. Trump cautioned that under such leadership, New York City would have “zero chance of success or even survival!”
On Election Day, Trump also emphasized that voting Republican is crucial for tackling affordability issues effectively.
“If affordability matters to you, vote Republican! For instance, energy prices are dropping, and gasoline is nearing $2 a gallon. When energy costs decline, everything else often follows suit!” Trump stated.
