President Trump congratulated Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on Thursday, marking him as the first American to be elected as Pope.
“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who has just been elevated to Pope. It’s a tremendous honor to have the first American pope,” Trump shared on The Society of Truth. “What an exciting moment for our country! I’m looking forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. This will be a very significant occasion!”
At 69 years old, Prevost hails from Chicago but has spent much of his career in Peru. He is a former Augustinian monk and completed his studies at Villanova University in 1977.
The sight of white smoke rising from the Vatican on Thursday afternoon confirmed that the Cardinals’ Conclave had selected a new Pope.
Pope Francis, who passed away last month at the age of 88, met with Roman Vice President Vance just hours before his death.
