Trump Mocks Schumer For Unintentionally Calling For Funding For ICE

Trump Teases Schumer Over Government Shutdown Comments

On Sunday, President Donald Trump took the opportunity to poke fun at Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer regarding his comments on the ongoing partial government shutdown.

Democrats have been holding back funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) due to its collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the recent attempt to secure funding for the department fell short of the required 60 votes last Friday. Schumer, during a speech on the Senate floor Saturday, called for an end to the shutdown.

In a video shared on Truth Social, Schumer stated, “We have to fund ICE, we have to fund TSA.”

Trump responded, noting that Schumer had earlier expressed being “confused” and mispronounced funding as “fund the ice cream” before correcting himself. “Thank you, Chuck, I agree!” Trump commented in his post.

The repercussions of the shutdown have been particularly visible among Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees, with many taking leave or resigning, leading to longer lines at airports. The DHS has resorted to implementing “emergency measures” for various agencies, including the TSA, FEMA, and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), due to the ongoing situation.

Despite claiming to support funding, Democrats have linked it to new restrictions on ICE following tragic incidents involving shootings during confrontations with those opposing federal immigration enforcement. They have put forward demands to limit ICE agents’ authority, like requiring judicial warrants before entering private properties.

In another development, Trump has nominated Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin from Oklahoma as a replacement at the Department of Homeland Security. This nomination has progressed in the Senate even as Democrats, including Senators John Fetterman and Martin Heinrich, broke ranks to support it.
