Trump Moving Forward With Tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico, Targeting Trade, Border and Fentanyl Concerns

White House confirmed that President Donald Trump would impose new tariffs on major US trading partners this weekend and strengthen the government's efforts to protect the US and national security.

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt announced that 25 % of the customs from Mexico and Canada will be imposed, and that imports in China will face 10 % obligations. She said that this movement was to be responsible for the role of drug trafficking and to secure more fair trade conditions for American workers.

“All of these countries have made it possible for illegal drugs to pour the United States,” said Reavit. “In recent years, the amount of Fentanyl, which has been seized at the southern border, can kill tens of millions of Americans, so the president is about to take action.”

Trump's first tariff, which has strengthened domestic manufacturing and shifts the supply chain, has set up a wide range of strategies. This time, the administration has expanded the use of tariffs beyond traditional trade concerns, and has led to a wider policy target, such as immigration and border security.

Canada, Mexico, and China are together, occupying more than one -third of US imports and exports, and focused on the US trade landscape. The White House has assigned tariffs as a way to secure commitments from these countries on problems from drug trafficking to manufacturing policies.

Industries with borders, such as automobiles, agriculture, and consumer goods, are expected to face higher costs if tariffs are maintained. In particular, automakers are urging them to reconsider the administration by quoting the complexity of the supply chain that integrates production in three countries.

The administration rarely provides a specific exemption or not, but Trump's trade advisor Peter Navaro proposes that tariffs can be useful as a negotiation tool to achieve a wider policy goal. I did. Trump has recently indicated that tariffs could exempt energy from Canada and Mexio.

Canada and Mexico have signaled what they will do if tariffs are implemented as planned on Saturday. Mexico President Claudia Shainbaum said that her government has been preparing for potential US trade measures for several months.

“We are preparing for every scenario,” she said. Mexico stated that it is taking important measures to cooperate with US officials regarding border security and transition management.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday that his government was still unknown about the details of tariffs, but had pledged to respond as needed.

“If the president chooses tariffs on Canada, we are ready for the response. It is an intentional, powerful but reasonable immediate response,” said Tordeau.

Economist is divided into the potential inflation of tariffs. Some argue that the higher the cost of imports, the higher the price of consumers, especially in the industry that depends on foreign components. Others argue that as the importer did in the first period of Trump's first period of Trump to China, it could absorb many costs.

The effectiveness of tariffs depends on how trade partners react and whether negotiations lead to border security and drug execution. Trump indicates that if Mexico and Canada do not take additional actions, tariffs can be further increased.

The administration has not excluded sector -specific exemption, but the authorities have little details about whether or not specific imports (such as oil) can be excluded.

For now, this movement has a major change in how tariffs are used as a policy tool, and has expanded its role for a wider geopolitical purpose beyond economic competition. 。
