Trump Refuses to Negotiate on Behalf of Ukraine in Meeting with Putin
During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, President Donald Trump made it clear that he wouldn’t be negotiating on Ukraine’s behalf. The discussion took place on Friday, and it followed a question from an Air Force reporter regarding the potential for territorial swaps between Ukraine and Russia.
Trump emphasized that any decision on that front should ultimately be made by Ukraine itself, noting that the primary aim of the meeting was to kick-start meaningful discussions on two key issues.
“They’re debated, but they have to let Ukraine make that decision. I think they’ll make the right decision. But I’m not here to negotiate with Ukraine,” he stated.
Furthermore, Trump suggested that Russia’s actions in Ukraine might be aimed at strengthening their negotiating position. He posited that Putin could be trying to prepare the groundwork for a more favorable agreement.
“I think they’re about to negotiate. He’s trying to set the stage. In his mind, he helps him make a better deal,” Trump said.
Despite the tensions, Trump expressed confidence that direct dialogue with Russian leaders could lead to positive outcomes. He acknowledged Putin’s intelligence and experience while highlighting the mutual respect they’ve developed over time.
“He’s a smart guy and he’s been doing it for a long time, but I too… we get along well. There’s a good level of respect on both sides. I think something’s coming,” he mentioned.
Trump also pointed out that while Putin’s engagement with business executives is a promising indicator, no further agreements would be reached until the conflict in Ukraine is resolved. He warned that if hostilities persist, serious economic repercussions could follow for Russia.
“I like it because they want to do business, but they’re not in business until we solve the war,” he added.
Earlier that morning, Trump departed the White House to engage with Putin, the latter’s first visit to the U.S. in over ten years. The meeting was scheduled for approximately 3:30 PM.
