Trump plans to take control of the Illinois National Guard, says Pritzker

Trump to federalize Illinois National Guard: Pritzker

Illinois National Guard Federated Amidst Tensions

On Saturday, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzkter announced that the Trump administration plans to federate the state’s National Guard to assist with law enforcement efforts in Chicago and Prairie areas.

“Earlier today, I received an ultimatum from the Trump administration’s War Department: either I mobilize our National Guard or they will do it for us,” he shared on social media.

He noted that the administration is set to federate around 300 members of the Illinois State Guard within hours.

This decision follows Pritzkter’s earlier comments that the Department of Homeland Security requested the deployment of 100 National Guard soldiers.

The Democratic governor pushed back against President Trump’s comments regarding rising lawlessness in the state, particularly focusing on Chicago as a place of concern.

In response to ongoing violent protests, the president remarked that 300 National Guard members would help protect federal officers and assets.

However, Pritzkter reiterated his opposition to using military presence, suggesting it could pose danger to residents. He wrote about an incident involving agents using chemicals near an elementary school, implying that the situation has turned into more of a media spectacle than a genuine pursuit of justice. “There’s truly no need for troops on the ground in Illinois,” he stated.

Pritzkter urged residents to document their interactions with soldiers and federal officials, as reports of harsh treatment have surfaced. Local reports have indicated troubling incidents, including families being taken from their homes during recent raids.

Beyond ground concerns, federal authorities have also imposed flight restrictions over the city, limiting drone activity which could document the unfolding events. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has voiced apprehensions regarding this development.

“The FAA’s temporary flight limitations come during troubling migrant raids in Chicago and the heavy presence of National Guard and federal agents,” an ACLU statement read. “There are serious questions about whether these measures aim to ensure safety or stifle scrutiny.”
