Trump receives McDonald's DoorDash delivery in the Oval Office on Tax Day

Trump Uses McDonald’s Delivery to Promote Tax Policy

President Donald Trump made a unique Tax Day pitch on Monday by introducing a DoorDash driver, Sharon Simmons, at the White House. As part of the event, he shared two bags of McDonald’s—his favorite fast food—while promoting a new policy to repeal the tax on tips.

During the interaction with Simmons and reporters, someone posed a question about how the White House treats tipping. “Is the White House a good tipster?” they asked her. In response, Trump unexpectedly reached into his pocket to pull out what looked like a $100 bill, handing it to Simmons with a grin.

Simmons, reflecting on her experience during the chat, said she had received valuable information from the White House, describing it as having a “very, very good” source. After Trump made his generous gesture, she affirmed, “You reminded me,” indicating the significance of the moment.

The president touted legislation known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which proposes that those earning tips could receive up to $25,000 in tax-deductible income from 2025 to 2028. This proposal aligns with research from the Tax Foundation, which analyzes tax policies.

Trump mentioned that he’d heard Simmons had missed out on an additional $11,000 due to high tax rates, suggesting it was the largest tax refund she had ever received. As a grandmother who kicked off her DoorDash career in 2022, Simmons has completed over 14,000 deliveries, according to a DoorDash statement.

In the release, DoorDash highlighted that the tip tax exemption significantly helped drivers, estimating they saved hundreds of millions of dollars after its enactment. Max Rettig, who oversees public policy for DoorDash, emphasized that this moment was beneficial for numerous Dashers across the nation, implying they would enjoy more financial relief when it came to tax time.

“DoorDash is proud to represent Dashers like Sharon in championing policies like tip tax exemption because these policies have a real impact on so many hardworking people and their families,” Rettig concluded.

While the details are intriguing, one has to wonder how this approach will resonate in the broader context. It’s a mixed bag of marketing a tax policy while spotlighting everyday workers and their challenges.
