President Trump is standing firm on the tariffs he recently imposed on India, which he enacted as a response to the country purchasing Russian oil. This comes as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin to strengthen their bond with the Kremlin.
In a post on his social platform, Trump expressed his worries about what he sees as a trade imbalance, labeling US-India relations as “a totally one-sided disaster!”
“Many may not realize that our trade with India is quite minimal, yet they have numerous businesses dealing with us,” he stated. Essentially, India exports a lot to the US, but until now, the US has hardly sold anything back—it’s been a one-sided relationship, one I’ve pointed out for years,” he added.
“The key issue is that India imposes tariffs on most imports, making it tough for our companies to sell there. It’s honestly a complete mismatch,” Trump asserted. “Moreover, India sources a majority of its oil and military supplies from Russia, with very little coming from the US.”
Import taxes on Indian products surged to 50% on Wednesday following Trump’s additional 25% tariffs, a move intended to penalize India for its oil purchases that, according to Trump, support Moscow’s military actions in Ukraine. India is already dealing with 25% “reciprocal” tariffs on its exports to the US.
India defends its Russian oil purchases, citing the financial necessity given its large population’s energy demands.
“They’re now willing to lower their tariffs, but this response is belated. They should’ve acted on this long ago. Just a few facts for people to think about!” Trump remarked in his post.
Some analysts suggest that Trump’s abrupt tariffs and his negative stance towards Modi have pushed India closer to forming ties with Russia and China. Following the announcement of the tariff increase, Modi mentioned having a “very good detailed conversation” with his “friend” Putin.
On Monday, Modi and Putin met during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China. Modi referred to the partnership with Moscow as “special and privileged,” while Putin called Modi his “dear friend,” praising the strong, friendly nature of their relationship.
“Russia and India have enjoyed a unique relationship for decades. They are trustworthy allies, which serves as the foundation for future collaboration,” Putin remarked. “This partnership is fundamentally nonpartisan and enjoys the support of the vast majority of our nations’ people.”
