Trump Pays Tribute to Victim of 2024 Rally Shooting
Former President Donald Trump has expressed condolences following the death of James “Jim” Copenhaver, a victim of the shooting that took place at his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in 2024. Copenhaver, who was 76, had been gravely injured in the attack and passed away this week, as confirmed by a social media announcement from the House Republicans.
In a heartfelt message on his Truth Social platform, Trump praised Copenhaver as a “true American patriot.” He reflected on the chaos of the rally, noting how a gunman tried to disrupt the event, but praised Copenhaver and other attendees for their bravery in standing up for their country’s values. “Jim Copenhaver, a true American Patriot, has passed away — A tremendous loss!” Trump wrote.
Trump recounted a famous moment from that day — after he was injured by a stray bullet, he stood up through a cluster of Secret Service agents and called for support, shouting “Fight, fight, fight!” This image of resilience remained a key part of his tribute.
In a follow-up post, he added, “God bless American Patriot and Warrior, James Copenhaver, and his incredible family. May he rest in peace!!!”
The Copenhaver family shared their grief through a statement delivered by their legal representative, Joseph A. Feldman. They described him as a loving husband, father, and grandfather, emphasizing that his family was his top priority. Copenhaver had a strong commitment to both his family and his country, having served in the armed forces. His family expressed profound gratitude for the support they received during his struggle following the shooting.
Representative Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) also released a statement honoring Copenhaver, remarking that his passing should motivate further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Biggs mentioned that two innocent lives were lost that day and vowed to push for legislation ensuring the protection of individuals at such events in the future.
Corey Comperatore, another victim from the attack, was killed instantly when the gunfire broke out. David Dutch, aged 57 at the time, was critically injured but has since survived the ordeal.
In response to the tragedy, Biggs introduced two legislative proposals aimed at enhancing the United States Secret Service’s operational focus and ensuring accountability regarding the agency’s handling of the rally.
