Trump’s Reaction to Olympic Skier’s Comments
President Donald Trump expressed his disapproval on Sunday after U.S. Olympic skier Hunter Hess stirred controversy with remarks about the upcoming Milan-Cortina Games. In a pointed social media post, Trump labeled Hess a “real loser.”
“A U.S. Olympic skier like Hunter Hess shouldn’t be on the team if he feels that way about representing his country,” Trump stated. He emphasized how challenging it is to support an athlete with such perspectives. “We need to make America great again!”
Mike Eruzione, known for his role in the “Miracle on Ice,” also criticized Hess. In a post on X, he suggested that if Hess held such sentiments, he shouldn’t don the Olympic uniform. Eruzione later deleted this comment.
Hess’s statements come against a backdrop of negative reactions toward the Trump administration, particularly regarding its approach to immigration enforcement. Early this year, an incident involving ICE agents in Minnesota resulted in a tragic death, inflaming public sentiment.
Reflecting on his experiences, Hess mentioned having “mixed emotions” about representing the U.S. “It’s complicated,” he admitted. “There’s a lot happening that I’m not entirely comfortable with, and I know many share similar feelings.” He clarified that for him, representing the United States means embodying the values he holds dear. “Wearing the flag doesn’t mean I endorse everything that’s happening in America,” Hess added.
With a focus on his personal motivations, Hess concluded, “I want to compete for my friends, family, and everyone who has helped me reach this moment.”
Hess will be participating in the men’s freeski halfpipe competition.
