Trump Responds to Stephen A. Smith’s Knicks Remarks
President Trump reacted to Stephen A. Smith’s comments shortly after leaving New York early Tuesday morning. Smith, the ESPN analyst, had vented about how he would hold the Knicks responsible for a loss in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, linking it to Trump’s attendance at the game.
Smith, who is considered a potential Democratic candidate for the 2028 election cycle, asserted that Trump “had no business” being at the game, stating, “If the New York Knicks lose tonight because of that, I blame him.”
As Trump passed through JFK Airport on his way back to Washington, he addressed Smith’s tirade from “First Take.” He described Smith as a “nice guy” but quickly diminished his remarks, saying, “You need a certain aptitude to run for president. You need a high IQ. I don’t know if Stephen has it. I don’t think he has it.”
Trump attended the NBA Finals game with his granddaughter, making history as the first sitting president to go to such an event. He acknowledged the NYPD officers who proudly displayed American flags during the national anthem.
Meanwhile, Smith’s on-air diatribe highlighted his disapproval of Trump’s presence, saying, “If the New York Knicks lose tonight because of that, I’m going to blame him,” which elicited laughter from his co-hosts.
He stated, “I’m criticizing the President of the United States! I’m going to keep doing it.” While expressing that he considers himself a moderate and fair-minded independent, he added, “If the Knicks lose tonight, I won’t be outraged as Stephen A. was.”
Smith further characterized Trump’s attendance as “selfish and narcissistic,” remarking, “This president has no business showing up in New York City.” He also wanted to clarify that his opposition wouldn’t change if a sitting Democratic president attended the game.
He concluded, “I would say the same thing about Obama, George W., Clinton. I wouldn’t mind going back to the Reagan era,” emphasizing his point that it was inappropriate regardless of party affiliation.
The Knicks ultimately lost to the San Antonio Spurs, 115-111, allowing the Spurs to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Game 4 is scheduled for Wednesday night at the Garden.
