Trump Announces National Guard Deployment to Combat Crime in D.C.
On Monday, President Donald Trump revealed plans to bolster National Guard forces and assume control of the Washington metropolitan police to address crime in the capital. This announcement follows a recent increase in federal law enforcement presence in D.C. over the weekend.
During a press conference, Trump stated, “We are deploying the National Guard to help reestablish law, order, and public safety in Washington, D.C. They will be allowed to do their job properly.” He also mentioned federalizing the metropolitan police department to effectively manage crime.
The National Guard, typically overseen by state governments, is a reserve force activated in various situations, including natural disasters. Trump’s deployment of troops from California amid immigration protests last June sparked some controversy, with the move bypassing California Governor Gavin Newsom.
The District of Columbia National Guard operates under federal supervision. Trump’s comments came shortly after he expressed, via his Truth Social platform, that Washington needed to be “freed” from crime, describing the environment as one plagued by “savages, filth, and scum.” He lamented that innocent people were tired of violence and murder.
Trump took over control of the D.C. police department following an incident on August 3, when former government staffer “Big Ball” was violently attacked in Logan Circle. This event appears to have prompted his decision to deploy the National Guard to address crime issues.
Trump stated, “What a shameful thing—crime rates, robbery, murder rates—we’re not going to allow it. I think we might need the National Guard quickly.” He also expressed openness to a federal takeover of the police department, though such a move could face legal challenges regarding whether the situation genuinely qualifies as an emergency.
Historically, Trump has consistently criticized violence in Washington. Notably, he remarked on Tuesday that crime in the city was “completely out of control.” Yet, statistics from the Metropolitan Police Department indicate a decline in crime rates: violent crime has reduced by 26% compared to last year, and incidents involving dangerous weapons have dropped by 20%, with murders down by 12%.
Meanwhile, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed skepticism about Trump’s portrayal of the city’s crime problems during an MSNBC interview on Sunday. She argued that comparing the situation to war-torn countries is exaggerated and untrue, voicing concerns over the efficient use of National Guard troops. “I don’t think that’s the most efficient use of our security guards,” she said.
