Trump says he has 'no option' but to deploy the National Guard to Portland

President Trump has stood by his choice to send the National Guard to Portland, Oregon, asserting that he has “no option” but to respond to the local protests.

In a post on Truth Social, he remarked that “the governor of Oregon must be living in a ‘dream world’.” He described Portland as “an endless disaster,” noting that many people are suffering and some are even losing their lives. It’s as if the city is in a “third world country.”

“As American patriots, we have no choice. Law and order must prevail in our cities and beyond!” he declared.

The Department of Defense has approved the deployment of 200 members of the Oregon National Guard to Portland, with Trump indicating they would serve to safeguard both the city and Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities.

This move has faced pushback from local residents and officials. On Sunday, Oregon and the city of Portland initiated a lawsuit against the federal administration to challenge the troop deployment.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has been vocally opposed, labeling the decision “an abuse of power” that harms both the community and the servicemen. At a press conference over the weekend, she expressed that there is simply “no need for military intervention here.”

The protests in Portland, sparked by ICE activities, have resulted in numerous arrests. Since June, 26 individuals have faced federal charges related to incidents near the ICE facility.

Some protesters have even been charged with assaulting law enforcement officials, raising concerns among residents. Others argue that excessive force from law enforcement has been used against them, yet it’s noted that there haven’t been any reported fatalities since the protests began in 2025.
