President-elect Trump said Thursday that he is working to set up a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“He wants to meet, and we're preparing for that,” Trump told Fox News' Peter Doocy at Mar-a-Lago during a meeting with Republican governors. .
Trump said he has had “a lot of communication” with Chinese President Xi Jinping and has also met with many other world leaders. However, he has not yet spoken to President Putin.
President Trump said of the Ukraine war: “But President Putin wants to meet with us. He's said so publicly, and we have to end that war. This is a bloody mess.”
President Trump has vowed to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, which began in early 2022 when Russian forces invaded the neighboring country. He said he intended to bring Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the negotiating table.
President Trump has long drawn criticism from Democrats over his relationship with President Vladimir Putin, with opponents accusing the president-elect of being too friendly and inflexible with Russia's authoritarian leader.
