Trump Comments on Lindsey Graham’s Death
President Donald Trump addressed the growing online speculation about Senator Lindsey Graham’s unexpected passing, asserting on Tuesday that the FBI would be “wasting their time” if they were investigating conspiracy theories instead of accepting the medical examiner’s early conclusion of a natural heart condition.
During a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi in the Oval Office, Trump attempted to quell rumors suggesting that Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, had been targeted by foreign adversaries. Graham died suddenly over the weekend after what his office initially indicated was a brief illness.
A preliminary report from the D.C. medical examiner identified an aortic dissection—essentially a tear in the main artery—as the cause of death, related to existing cardiovascular disease.
The sudden nature of this tragedy, particularly following Graham’s recent trip to Ukraine where he’d announced a collaboration with the Trump administration on new sanctions against Russia, led to a surge of unverified claims online.
Speculation grew further after FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed on Sunday that the bureau was providing assistance to local authorities.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the bureau is aiding local authorities after Senator Graham’s sudden death. He commended Graham as a devoted public servant. Authorities note there are ongoing inquiries.
Reports indicated that around 20 federal agents and Capitol Police were seen at Graham’s Washington home. When questioned about the FBI’s presence, Trump noted that Graham’s health issues were likely hereditary.
Trump reflected on Graham’s father, who passed away from a heart attack at 69, saying, “I think, you know, he had a problem. His father had a very similar problem, as you know.”
Trump acknowledged having a somewhat complicated relationship with Graham but mentioned he had asked White House medical staff for details regarding Graham’s death. He noted the condition was distinct from the typical artery blockages that Graham had dealt with in the past.
“At first, I heard it was clogged arteries. Because he did have clogged arteries. He had a problem with that,” he stated. “But what happened is actually something that’s very hard to detect. It was not related to any blockage.”
According to Trump, experts indicated that once a life-threatening tear occurs, there’s often little that can be done.
“This is something that is very, almost, undetectable, and if it happens, there’s not much you can do about it,” he reiterated. “Sounds unfortunate, but there’s not much you can do about it.”
Trump further urged law enforcement to disregard online conspiracy theories, calling any investigation into those narratives a misuse of resources. He remarked, “I don’t see a lot of evil there. I know there’s all sorts of conspiracy theories going along, and I think the FBI is wasting their time if they’re doing it.”
When asked about the FBI’s investigation, Trump commented, “I know there’s all sorts of conspiracy theories going … I think the FBI is wasting their time if they’re doing that.”
Sources indicate that the FBI’s presence at Graham’s residence is viewed as a “standard precautionary measure” due to his role as a high-ranking lawmaker and his involvement in sensitive international issues.
While the FBI remains tight-lipped about their operations, Governor Henry McMaster from South Carolina is moving to ensure Senate continuity, naming Graham’s sister, Darline Graham, as a temporary replacement until a special election can take place.
