Putin and Trump Set to Meet Soon
Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump in the coming days, following the conclusion of Trump’s 10-day peace deadline, as reported by Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov.
This meeting was initiated by the Russian side through special envoy Steve Witkov. The last face-to-face meeting between the U.S. and Russian presidents occurred in 2021 when Putin met with former President Joe Biden in Geneva, Switzerland. The specific times and locations for the upcoming meeting have yet to be announced.
“The U.S. proposal has basically led to an agreement to have a high-level bilateral meeting in the near future, meaning a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump,” Ushakov said during a press briefing. This indicates a significant diplomatic move. It’s interesting, though—I wonder how the dynamics have shifted since they last met.
Recently, Russia has been negotiating peace while also continuing military operations in Ukraine. Trump has shown increasing urgency regarding the situation, pushing for “severe” sanctions back in mid-July but shifted the deadline due to ongoing resistance from the Kremlin. Putin has claimed that Russia can endure the economic pressures from these Western sanctions, arguing that the current situation is different from earlier actions taken during Biden’s presidency.
Ukrainian President Voldy Meezelensky expressed cautious optimism about the meeting. On social media, he mentioned discussions involving both German and French officials about the intentions of the Trump administration and Russia.
He stated, “Various potential forms of peace-producing leader-level meetings were also discussed yesterday. Two bilaterals and one trilateral.” He emphasized the importance of these talks saying that this could be a step towards ending the conflict, and thanked those who have supported peace efforts.
Neither the Russian Foreign Ministry nor the White House has commented on inquiries regarding this meeting.
