Trump shooter Thomas parents retain high-powered lawyer as feds probe what they knew and when: report

The family of Thomas Matthew Crooks has hired a major law firm as the FBI continues its investigation into the shooting at last month’s rally that nearly assassinated former President Donald Trump.

Nearly six weeks after the shooting, federal authorities are still struggling to understand why Crooks opened fire on a crowd in Butler, Pennsylvania, and they know little about the 20-year-old man he was when he opened fire.

Led by veteran lawyers John Quinn and Matthew Logue, Quinn Logue LLP specializes in personal injury, legal negligence and employment litigation cases, according to the firm’s website.

The firm also practices criminal defense, but judging by their backgrounds, the firm’s partners appear to focus on civil litigation.

The firm’s team of attorneys has been widely recognized by organizations such as Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers in America and the National Association of Trial Lawyers.

A neighbor of the Crooks family in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, told The Washington Post that their quiet street, which was filled with reporters and police for much of last month, has now returned to nearly normal.

“It’s been weeks since the police have been here. Nothing has happened, no police activity,” nearby resident Kelly Little, 39, told The Washington Post last week, noting that while local officers pass by occasionally, no officers are stationed there long-term.

Crooks’ parents have also avoided social interactions since the shooting, but neighbors said that was normal before it drew national attention.

“Anyone on this street, they barely know these people. They don’t even know their names,” another neighbor, Karen, 77, told The Washington Post.

The lack of clarity about Crooks’ motive has led some lawmakers to criticize the FBI and Secret Service for dragging their feet in investigating the first attempted assassination of a sitting and former U.S. president in more than 40 years.

“More than a month after the attempted assassination of former President Trump, the FBI still has not provided Congress or the public with any concrete information about Crooks’ motive,” Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) told The Washington Post.

What we know about the attempted assassination of President Trump

  • 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks has been identified as the shooter who attempted to assassinate Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
  • Crooks was shot and killed by a Secret Service agent.
  • The gunman grazed President Trump’s ear, killed a 50-year-old former fire chief and wounded two other people at the rally.
  • Investigators detailed Crooks’ search history to lawmakers, revealing that he sought out dates for speeches by President Trump and the Democratic National Convention.
  • FBI officials said the criminal’s search history also revealed a broad interest in famous people and celebrities, regardless of political affiliation.
  • “I was supposed to be dead,” Trump told The Washington Post exclusively at the rally, describing how he survived the “surreal” assassination attempt.
  • Prominent politicians, including President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, addressed the nation about the shooting, calling it a “heinous, horrific and despicable act.”
A detailed breakdown of Saturday’s shooting: Crooks’ car was found nearby and reportedly contained explosives inside.

“The FBI needs to stop dilly-dallying and provide serious updates on their investigation. It’s a day wasted when the FBI and Secret Service don’t keep the American people informed.”

Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who is involved in a bipartisan Senate investigation into the assassination attempt on President Trump, also expressed frustration with the progress of the investigation so far.

“All I can say is the Secret Service and the FBI are basically footing the gas. They’re stonewalling us,” Johnson said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”

A woman who answered the phone at Quinn Logue when contacted by The Post Monday morning said the company had no comment.
