Trump Addresses Election Security Concerns
On Thursday night, President Donald Trump delivered a speech focusing on what he described as a “free and fair” election. He also announced the declassification of significant information exposing “shocking vulnerabilities” regarding what he termed “hacking, exploitation, and foreign interference.”
“This important information has been suppressed for many years,” Trump stated. “The American people are wonderful, and we are great Americans. But, I think, things are changing now.”
As his speech unfolded, a document detailing these claims was made available on the White House website.
The speech coincided with ongoing efforts from the administration to implement policies, laws, and executive orders aimed at securing U.S. elections.
During his address, Trump mentioned, “The documents released tonight were compiled by the White House Government Transparency Task Force—a group of dedicated individuals—and the President’s Intelligence Advisory Council, backed by our top intelligence officials, who have thoroughly reviewed the findings we are presenting and confirmed their authenticity.”
Before speaking, Trump hinted that his announcement would be “big news.” He also discussed accomplishments of his administration, like lowering drug prices, reducing crime, and strengthening border security, while emphasizing election integrity.
The White House released four sections of the document addressing alleged vulnerabilities in electronic voting and vote-counting systems. These included concerns about China’s acquisition and misuse of U.S. voter data, investigations into Michigan’s voter registration, and allegations of noncitizens appearing on state voter rolls.
Trump asserted that China has created a task force to gather personal information about U.S. voters, including names, addresses, political affiliations, and so on, for misuse.
Interestingly, Trump claimed that reports from the CIA and NSA regarding Chinese interference were not included in his nearly daily presidential briefings. He expressed that Congress had not been informed either.
He further stated, “One email exchanged among intelligence analysts showed they intentionally fabricated the president’s daily briefings to withhold crucial information about Chinese activities relating to the election.”
In light of these revelations, Trump urged the Director of National Intelligence, the DOJ, the FBI, and the CIA to investigate, terminate those involved, and pursue criminal charges if necessary.
