Trump states it's 'very late' for Iran to start discussions after 'being severely harmed'

Trump Comments on Iranian Peace Talks

In a recent statement, President Trump remarked that Iranian officials are pushing for a peace summit with the White House, indicating that they are in a vulnerable position. However, he mentioned that it may be “very late” for such discussions, especially in light of recent escalations over the past week.

Trump has been oscillating between negotiating a deal with Tehran and backing Israel’s airstrikes against Iran’s nuclear activities. He emphasized that the timing for negotiations is not ideal following the recent six-day conflict involving Israel.

“It’s really slow,” Trump explained to reporters while overseeing the installation of a new flagpole on the White House lawn. “There’s a huge difference a week ago,” he added, suggesting that circumstances have changed significantly.

The president dismissed concerns that it might be too late for diplomatic efforts, quipping that “the only thing that’s too late is Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell,” in connection with Powell’s hesitance to adjust interest rates.

Additionally, Trump relayed that an Iranian envoy had proposed visiting the White House, while also mentioning that Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to facilitate mediation. “I said, ‘Vladimir, let’s mediate Russia first. We can worry about this later,'” he said, indicating a preference for other priorities.

As tensions escalate, smoke was seen rising from sites in Iran following Israeli airstrikes, which reportedly led to casualties. Trump noted the challenges faced by Iran, stating that they are “completely vulnerable” due to a lack of effective air defenses.

Praising the Iranian people, Trump acknowledged the complexities involved in the situation. “They can be difficult,” he said, “but they are intelligent individuals and experiencing significant hardship.” He seemed to display a mix of admiration and concern regarding their current state.
