Trump’s Comments on California’s Response to Protests
In Washington, former President Trump has made remarks regarding a situation in Los Angeles where an individual burned the American flag repeatedly over the course of a year. He suggested that California’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, has mishandled the response to unrest in the city, saying the governor could “theoretically” face legal consequences.
During an episode of Miranda Devine’s “Pod Force One,” Trump proposed that anyone involved in such actions should face an automatic prison sentence of one year. “If you burn the American flag, and it happens often in Los Angeles, I think you should go to prison for a year,” he noted decisively.
When asked about blocking immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) operations in Los Angeles, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Newsom’s performance. “Well, he’s not doing a good job,” Trump said, indicating that there seems to be a lack of accountability in the governor’s actions. “It’s almost like a dismissal of responsibility,” he added, emphasizing that such situations are unprecedented.
On a late-night phone call with Newsom, Trump reportedly urged the governor to address the escalating issues in the city. “I mentioned that it looked like your city is on fire,” Trump recalled. “He acknowledged the severity of the situation.”
Trump has consistently advocated for legal consequences for those who disrespect the flag, having backed a bill during his presidency aimed at codifying a ban on flag desecration. However, legal experts, including the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, have pointed out that flag burning is protected under the First Amendment.
Amid tensions, Tom Homan, a former immigration enforcement official, warned Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass about potential legal repercussions for obstructing ICE operations. “If you help and protect an illegal immigrant, that’s a felony,” Homan cautioned.
On a related note, the Department of Homeland Security reported the arrest of 118 undocumented immigrants during a recent deportation sweep, which included gang members facing various charges like drug trafficking and domestic violence.
The situation escalated recently, with protests leading to clashes with federal law enforcement and incidents of vandalism. Reports indicated that LAPD was unable to respond promptly due to the disturbances.
In response to the unrest, Trump activated 2,000 National Guard members, stating, “If we hadn’t intervened, it would have been much worse.” He noted recent events like the unrest in Minneapolis and expressed a belief that Newsom is likely grateful for the federal involvement.
In the wake of these developments, the Newsom administration initiated a federal lawsuit, claiming that Trump’s actions infringe upon California’s 10th Amendment rights regarding National Guard control. Newsom challenged Homan directly in an NBC News interview, inviting law enforcement to take action against him.
