Bryson DeChambeau, a MAGA-supporting superstar golfer, embraced his inner Donald Trump on Monday by hitting his rival with a savage quip.
LIV member DeChambeau defeated Rory McIlroy at the U.S. Open back in June. On the 18th hole, McIlroy missed a short par putt and dropped one stroke behind DeChambeau, who went on to scramble for par and secure his second U.S. Open win. After a fantastic round, it was a truly gut-wrenching moment for McIlroy, whose last major win was a decade ago, in 2014. “I’d like to go up against Bryson and try to get him back for what he did to me at the U.S. Open,” McIlroy told a gallery of fans and press.
“Well, to be fair, you kind of did it to yourself,” DeChambeau quipped, reminiscent of the president-elect’s very best banter. The comment prompted laughs and an “Oh wow!” from the crowd.
McIlroy seemed to take it well, all things considered. He did do it to himself at Pinehurst in June, and it still has to sting knowing he came so close to his first major win in a decade, only to fall short on his last putt of the day.
And, like Trump, DeChambeau has not only developed a knack for being a crowd-pleasing, man-of-the-people, but he also has the same sharp wit that the president-elect deploys so often, whether it’s debating President Joe Biden or fielding biased questions from liberal reporters.
