Trump targets Venezuela for oil while Congress neglects its responsibility to hold him accountable

Concerns Over U.S. Engagement in Venezuela

The president’s push for oil from Venezuela is fraught with risks. It’s not just a dangerous endeavor; it sets a troubling precedent. Congress should intervene to prevent potential loss of American military lives.

One of us is a congressman with experience leading Marines in Latin America’s jungles, while the other is a Texas state representative and Senate candidate, representing the largest oil-producing state. As members of the Majority Democratic Party, we aim to restore faith among an increasingly fatigued American populace. We both believe that Republicans in Congress have neglected their duty to impose necessary checks on militaristic tendencies that impact both our military and the everyday Texans.

The president’s actions toward Venezuela have empowered the corrupt factions running the nation, while sending the message that their oil is now, effectively, under U.S. interest. President Trump has signaled that he intends for U.S. oil companies to help rebuild Venezuela’s neglected energy sector, which poses considerable challenges.

For companies like Chevron, robust support from the U.S. government is crucial. They need assurances regarding the safety of personnel and assets because the Venezuelan military, along with various criminal organizations, present significant threats. This is partly why the president has not ruled out ground troops. Military involvement might be necessary for securing oil extraction operations.

The hostility faced by American forces in Venezuela involves an enemy familiar with the terrain, having spent years maneuvering through challenging landscapes. In stark contrast, U.S. military strategy has largely centered on modern warfare techniques, which may not adequately prepare troops for the complexities of jungle combat.

Let’s be clear—our troops are incredibly skilled and capable of completing their missions. However, the reality is that they might be engaging for the profits of the elite rather than for ideals such as democracy or a brighter future for the Venezuelan people. Facing obstacles like disease and lack of support, they could be caught in a web of greed.

Recently, President Trump made a bold statement, linking oil company donations to significant deals, potentially amounting to 300 billion barrels of oil. Yet, it seems unlikely that such actions will lead to lower gasoline prices for Americans in the immediate future. In a market where over 100 million barrels are consumed daily, an extra 500,000 barrels is unlikely to shift prices or create jobs, especially with recent layoffs in Texas.

Chevron executives, along with others close to the regime, aim to gain control and wealth from the world’s largest oil reserves. The president’s policies, reminiscent of tariffs and tax cuts skewed toward the wealthy, tend to reinforce existing inequalities.

What’s concerning is the legality of these actions; military strikes against Venezuela are unauthorized. The president promotes that his military involvement is merely supportive, but his integrity is questionable, given incidents like the one where he humiliated U.S. soldiers for a photo op with Russian President Putin.

This premise is fundamentally flawed. Unless there’s an imminent threat, the president requires Congress’s consent to deploy military force, and the situation in Venezuela hardly qualifies as one. If he genuinely cared about the drug epidemic, he might focus on China’s fentanyl problem instead.

Neither political party should normalize the idea that a president can engage in military strikes independently. Such a trend could lead to reckless military operations and unnecessary loss of resources. Already, the president appears focused on other regions, including Cuba and Colombia. It’s essential for Republicans to reclaim their stance and recognize that neither military presence nor economic stability will flourish under unchecked deployments in Venezuela.
