Trump thanks RFK Jr for endorsement after third-party candidate suspends his campaign

Former President Trump spoke at a Las Vegas restaurant on Friday and thanked third-party candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for his support, minutes after the candidate said he was dropping out of the race because he “didn’t want to be a distraction.”

“Bobby, we got a tremendous endorsement from RFK Jr.,” Trump said, addressing restaurant workers and other supporters at Il Toro e la Capra, just off the Las Vegas Strip.

The Republican presidential candidate said he plans to elaborate further on his endorsement of RFK Jr. at a rally in Glendale, Arizona, on Friday night, in the same location where Vice President Harris held a large rally earlier this month, where Trump teased a “surprise guest.”

He continued, “But I just want to thank everybody. And I want to thank Bobby. It was great. Really, that’s a big thing. He’s a great guy and well respected by everybody.”

RFK Jr. endorsed former President Trump minutes before he was set to speak in Las Vegas, saying at a scheduled news conference in Glendale that he plans to keep Trump’s name off the ballot in Republican and Democratic states, allowing people to vote for him but removing his name from battleground states.

“There are three main reasons that got me into this race in the first place, and they are the primary reasons that prompted me to leave the Democratic Party, to run as an independent, and now to support President Trump,” said RFK Jr. “Those causes are free speech, the war in Ukraine, and the war on children.”

RFK Jr. said the DNC has “waged an ongoing legal battle” against Trump and him, accusing the committee of running a “sham primary” and blocking a full-scale primary challenge to the president before Biden won the Democratic nomination, then backing away in July and endorsing Harris.

Will Robert F. Kennedy withdraw from the 2024 race and give Trump a win over Harris?

The Harris campaign reached out to RFK Jr. supporters in a statement to Fox News on Friday.

“To all Americans who are tired of Donald Trump and looking for a new way, our campaign is for you. To get results for workers and those who feel left behind, you need leaders who will fight for you and not just for themselves, and who will unite us not divide us. Vice President Harris wants your support. And even if we don’t see eye to eye on every issue, Kamala Harris knows there is more that unites us than divides us – respect for rights, public safety, protecting freedoms and opportunity for all.”

“This is great,” said Mary Beth Cahill, a senior adviser to the DNC.

“The more voters know about RFK Jr., the less favorable they view him. Instead of building broader support, Donald Trump is following in the footsteps of a failed extremist candidate. Farewell,” she said.
