Trump’s Commitment to Greenland Acquisition
On Friday, President Donald Trump reiterated the United States’ intention to acquire Greenland, suggesting that economic pressure might be used on countries unwilling to cooperate.
Trump views the acquisition of Greenland as crucial for U.S. national security. He indicated that he might impose hefty tariffs on nations that do not back American control of the island.
During a round table discussion, he claimed to have urged French President Emmanuel Macron to increase prescription drug prices. Trump has warned that if Macron does not comply, a 25% tariff could be placed on all imports from France.
Identifying himself as the “tariff king,” Trump noted that he had made similar threats to several key nations, including Germany, to pressure them into lowering U.S. drug prices. He mentioned that these potential tariffs would surpass what countries currently pay in price hikes. According to him, all nations approached agreed to his request, ensuring preferential treatment.
He remarked, “We might do that to Greenland as well. Tariffs could come into play if countries don’t agree on Greenland because we need it for national security.”
Trump mentioned that discussions regarding Greenland have been ongoing with NATO, emphasizing its importance for U.S. security. “If we don’t have that, we’ll have a significant gap in our national security, especially regarding military investments,” he added.
In a related note, Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently outlined the administration’s plans to purchase Greenland from Denmark, citing a desire to foster a beneficial trade relationship between the U.S. and Greenland. The U.S. and its NATO allies share concerns about growing adversaries in the Arctic region.
