Trump to Patrol with Police and National Guard Amid Crime Crackdown

President Donald Trump is set to join metropolitan police and the National Guard on Thursday. This action follows ongoing efforts to integrate police departments and send troops to address crime in Washington, D.C.

In a recent radio interview, Trump stated, “I’m going out with the police and the military tonight.”

National Guard Deployment from Several States

As part of his crime reduction initiatives, Trump initially mobilized 800 National Guard members in Washington on August 11. Since then, additional troops from states like Ohio, West Virginia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee have been deployed to assist.

Interestingly, this patrol comes shortly after Vice President J.D. Vance visited the National Guard at Union Station on Wednesday. He remarked, “We’re really seeing a big impact because these guys are breaking their a-,” which hints at the ongoing efforts making a noticeable difference.

Promises Made on the Campaign Trail

Trump has made several commitments concerning Washington during his 2024 campaign, stating “He’s keeping his promises.” Vance also highlighted the struggles seen in places like Union Station, touching on issues of homelessness and substance abuse. He mentioned, “This should be a monument to American greatness.”

The Home Rule Act of 1973 allows for temporary federal control of the Metropolitan Police for emergencies stretching up to 30 days. After that, congressional approval is necessary for any further actions. However, it appears that similar restrictions do not apply to the D.C. National Guard.

It suggests that if challenges persist, further expansion of the National Guard might occur in the upcoming weeks.

Activating Troops for Crime Control

Trump’s activation of the National Guard troops ties into his description of Washington’s crime as “completely out of control.” Observers are keen to see what changes might unfold with this increased presence.

Complicating matters for the Trump administration, Washington officials recently filed a lawsuit. They are contesting the move to federalize local police, arguing that it exceeds the administration’s limited powers under the law. D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwarb stated, “This is the most serious threat Home Rule D.C. has ever faced, and we are fighting to stop it.”
