Trump: U.S. 'Has to' Take Action After Iran Downed U.S. Army Helicopter Near Strait of Hormuz

US Response After Helicopter Incident with Iran

President Trump stated on Tuesday that the United States “must respond” following the downing of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter by Iranian forces while it was patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz. This incident has heightened tensions amidst ongoing negotiations aimed at resolving the prolonged conflict between the two nations.

In a message on Truth Social, Trump pointed out, “Last night, we were informed by our great military that Iranian forces shot down one of our highly-skilled Apache helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz.” The helicopter crash occurred near the Omani coast early on Tuesday morning, and reports indicated that both pilots were unharmed and rescued by U.S. forces within two hours.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) indicated that the cause of the crash is still under investigation, confirming that the crew members were safe and in stable condition after their extraction.

Before leaving New York for Washington, Trump reassured reporters that the pilots were fine and suggested that more information would follow. This declaration came on the heels of his intervention to mitigate escalating violence between Israel and Iran, highlighting the administration’s focus on reaching a comprehensive agreement that tackles Iran’s nuclear ambitions, sanctions relief, and navigation through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Trump expressed optimism during a call supporting Sen. Lindsey Graham, stating that the U.S. and Iran might be on the brink of a significant deal that could reopen the vital maritime route while preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. “We’re a very tough team, and I think we’re winning that battle,” he remarked, predicting a “complete victory” would soon be declared.

Shortly after emphasizing the need for a U.S. response to the helicopter incident, Trump also mentioned the monumental rebuilding task facing Iran after this prolonged conflict. He indicated that the U.S. might eventually assist in rebuilding infrastructure, estimating that Iran could need over a trillion dollars for reconstruction efforts.

In past remarks, Trump had confided to aides that he wouldn’t consider resuming full-scale military operations against Iran unless American lives were lost, further complicating the situation. Following the helicopter incident, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi affirmed Iran’s commitment to diplomacy while simultaneously asserting its readiness to respond militarily if required.

Araghchi noted that foreign forces operating near Iranian boundaries could be at risk due to accidents or mistakes, suggesting that the incident might not have been deliberate. He emphasized that foreign troops should withdraw to minimize risks.

The downing of the helicopter and Trump’s subsequent remarks came as negotiations continued over Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, and maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Vice President J.D. Vance expressed confidence that despite recent tensions, a long-term agreement remained within reach, framing it as a potential win for the American populace.
