Trump Calls for NATO to Halt Russian Oil Purchases
President Donald Trump is urging all NATO nations to discontinue their oil purchases from Russia, asserting that this could contribute to an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
On a recent Saturday, Trump shared a portion of a letter he addressed to NATO members on X.
“When all NATO countries reach a consensus and cease buying oil from Russia, I’m prepared to impose significant sanctions on Russia,” Trump stated. “It was shocking to see some countries still purchasing Russian oil!”
NATO comprises 32 member nations, among which Turkey ranks as the third largest importer of Russian oil, following China and India, according to the Energy Research Centre (CREA). From January 2023 to July 2025, Turkey reportedly spent $62.1 billion on Russian oil.
The survey also noted that Hungary and Slovakia are importing Russian oil.
In 2024, about 85% of Russia’s liquid natural gas imports were sourced by France, Belgium, and Spain, based on the Institute for Energy Economics Analysis.
Trump contends that purchasing fossil fuels from Russia significantly undermines NATO’s bargaining power against Russia.
He encouraged NATO to act, insisting he’s “ready to act” when they are ready.
“Furthermore, we believe NATO as a coalition will implement tariffs ranging from 50% to 100% on China and would withdraw completely after the resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which would significantly aid in concluding this tragic and senseless war,” Trump remarked.
CREA reports that China is the leading purchaser of Russian fossil fuels, spending $158.7 billion on oil between January 2023 and July 2025.
“China maintains a strong grip on Russia, and imposing these tariffs will weaken that control,” Trump added in his letter.
Trump emphasized that this is “not a Trump war,” asserting that if he had been reelected as president in 2020, this conflict would not have unfolded, a sentiment echoed by Russian President Putin last month.
As part of his diplomatic efforts, Trump has sought to mediate peace talks between Putin and Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky. He has expressed frustration over their inability to coordinate meetings, largely due to differing views on locations.
Now, Trump claims that NATO countries that disregard his suggestions are “wasting” his time.
