Trump Meets with African Leaders to Discuss Economic Investment
During a meeting with West African leaders on Wednesday, President Donald Trump encouraged them to expedite their discussions. The focus of the meeting was on enhancing access to essential minerals and addressing China’s expanding influence in Africa.
“I’m very grateful for it,” Trump remarked, suggesting that having a quicker pace would be beneficial. He requested that leaders introduce themselves and their countries promptly.
At this gathering, Trump also urged West African leaders to shift from reliance on aid towards fostering trade, particularly in light of significant cuts to U.S. aid. He highlighted the “great economic potential” in Africa and emphasized the importance of pursuing mutually beneficial partnerships rather than just traditional aid.
Leaders from Liberia, Senegal, Gabon, Mauritania, and Guinea-Bissau highlighted their nations’ natural resources and expressed gratitude for Trump’s role in mediating long-standing conflicts, particularly between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Trump described these nations as “vibrant places” full of minerals, oil, and human possibilities.
This conference occurred amid a transition in U.S. foreign policy, as the Trump administration recently dismantled the U.S. International Development Agency. Additionally, Trump is pursuing an effort to resolve the Hamas-Israel conflict, aiming for a lasting peace deal focused on hostages and disarmament.
