Trump’s Warning to Iran Amidst Ongoing Protests
On Sunday night, President Donald Trump declared that the Islamic Republic of Iran would face severe repercussions if it continued the violent suppression of protesters, reminiscent of past uprisings. At a press briefing on Air Force One, he emphasized, “We’re watching very closely. If they start killing people like they’ve been doing, we’re going to get a very hard blow from the United States.”
For over a week, anti-regime protests have been sweeping through Iran, with Trump suggesting he might intervene to support the demonstrators. The unrest spans at least 78 cities, prompting calls for an end to the rule of the 86-year-old Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. According to the Human Rights Defenders of Iran (HRAI), the government has responded violently, resulting in at least 20 deaths, including three children, and around 990 arrests, with over 40 being minors.
Shukriya Bradost, an Iran expert and CEO of Four Side Security Solutions, commented that Trump’s confrontational stance towards Iran is significant, recalling his previous actions, such as the order to eliminate Qasem Soleimani. “It resonates with the protesters because it comes from a president who has shown determination,” he remarked, suggesting that Trump’s words have emboldened those opposing the regime.
The protests represent a shift in public sentiment; demonstrators appear more resolute, demanding not just reforms but outright regime change. According to Bradost, Iranians are looking for a clear stance from the U.S. to support their plight against repression. This contrasts sharply with earlier periods, like in 2009, when President Obama faced criticism for aligning with the Iranian government during protests.
People observing the unrest note that Trump’s supportive messages have added momentum to the demonstrations. Mard Sogom, a veteran Iran specialist, indicated that opposition groups are increasingly seeking assistance from the U.S. and allies like Israel to counteract the regime. “The protests this time are different. The citizens aren’t just calling for adjustments; they want fundamental change,” he said.
The Iranian government finds itself in a precarious position, grappling with both domestic outrage and international pressure. An Iranian official shared that the combination of widespread anger and threats from Washington limits the government’s options, pushing leaders into a corner.
Masih Alinejad, an activist advocating for regime change, highlighted how Trump’s strong support has inspired many Iranians, stating that this is a historic moment of solidarity. Alinejad urged Trump to take further actions, such as expelling Iran’s representatives from international bodies and facilitating communication avenues for protesters.
