Trump’s Warning on DHS Funding
President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning regarding the funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), stating he may employ U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at airports if Democrats don’t agree to allocate necessary funds.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump asserted that if there’s no quick agreement from Democrats, he would initiate unprecedented security measures, including deploying ICE at airports with authority to detain undocumented immigrants. “If the radical left Democrats do not immediately sign a deal that will make our country, especially our airports, free and safe again, I will move our talented, patriotic ICE officers to our airports,” he stated. He also mentioned specific groups, insinuating that he would focus on individuals from certain backgrounds.
This comes as House Speaker Mike Johnson indicated that the stalled DHS funding bill is set to be introduced in the House for a third time next week. Reports suggest that Senate Democrats are resisting any funding without stricter immigration enforcement measures attached.
Negotiations on DHS funding remain a challenge, particularly with many airports facing long TSA lines as spring break travelers increase. This disruption affects the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which is under the DHS umbrella.
With the potential funding gap, TSA employees have been facing the prospect of working without compensation. It was noted that over 300 TSA staff members have resigned since the funding issues began. A local TSA union leader expressed feelings of exhaustion and an increasing burden as the situation continues.
