Trump warns of 'irreversible' consequences if Democrats trigger a government shutdown

Trump’s Warning on Potential Government Shutdown

In Washington, President Trump expressed that if Congressional Democrats trigger a partial government shutdown late at night, he would take “irreversible” actions.

“During shutdowns, we can make decisions that can’t be undone—like letting go of large numbers of people or cutting certain programs,” he said, reiterating the point. “Everyone understands that Russell, the White House budget director, has gained popularity because he can adjust budgets to levels that were previously unattainable, which poses risks when shutdowns occur.”

He added, “Shutdowns allow us to address various issues in healthcare, potentially reducing staff who opt out but wish to eliminate fraud and waste.”

The White House’s Office of Management and Budget, under Vought’s leadership, recently instructed federal agencies to prepare for permanent layoffs of non-essential personnel if a shutdown happens.

Despite these warnings, Senate Democrats are pushing to extend pandemic-era aid for approximately 22 million individuals who utilized government funds to purchase private insurance through the Affordable Care Act exchanges.

Congressional Democrats are also looking to restore funding for foreign aid and federally-supported media programs this year.

A guide from the Human Resources Administration indicates that federal workers could face a 60-day notice if a shutdown occurs, which could significantly impact revenue.

According to OPM, “RIF notifications issued shortly before or after expenditures are set to expire, starting October 1, 2025, usually allow for a 60-day notice in which employees maintain their employment status.”
