Trump Warns of Trade Deal Issues With Canada Following Liberal Government's Steps to Acknowledge a Palestinian State

Trump’s Trade Talks with Canada in Jeopardy

Late Wednesday night, President Donald Trump suggested that trade discussions with Canada might come to a halt following Canada’s announcement to recognize the Palestinian state.

In a press conference earlier that day, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Canada would support the recognition of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September. This declaration prompted President Trump to respond, questioning the implications of Canada’s leadership decision.

He expressed, “It’s incredible! Canada has just declared its support for the Palestinian territory. This complicates our prospects for a trade agreement.” Trump shared this sentiment on social media.

This move by Canada aligns with similar positions from key US allies like France and the UK. On July 24, French President Emmanuel Macron indicated on social media that he also recognized the Palestinian territory while urging the demilitarization of Hamas.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer added that the UK would recognize Palestine during the upcoming UN General Assembly unless there are significant actions taken by Israel to address the ongoing crisis in Gaza.

While returning to the U.S. from Scotland, Trump remarked to a reporter that acknowledging Palestinian statehood could potentially “reward Hamas.”

As the August 1 deadline for tariffs approaches, Trump recently finalized a major trade agreement involving countries like South Korea and Japan. Despite this, discussions with Canada remain ongoing, with no agreement yet established.

If a deal isn’t struck by Friday, Trump has indicated he will impose a 35% tariff on all Canadian goods not included in the existing US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.

The White House has not provided any immediate comments regarding this situation.
