In an interview with Des Moines CBS affiliate KCCI on Tuesday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), a 2024 Republican presidential candidate, said that his 2024 Republican rival, former President Donald Trump, had no idea what states had introduced that fall. He said it would “rescind pro-life protections.” “I will never support anything in the federal government that limits a state's ability to protect lives,” he said before any restrictions he enacts in federal law.
“He's saying he's going to find a 15-week, 20-week period before which he's going to repeal pro-life protections,” DeSantis said. Regardless, whatever he chooses, he's going to have one federal rule that says no protection before 18, 20 weeks. And he's going to make sure that everyone is happy with what he's done. He said so in an interview on NBC. Well, even if the left is happy with what they're doing, the pro-lifers won't be happy with it, because the left is very combative on this. That's why I would never support any federal policy that limits the ability of states to protect life. He indicated he would do that. That's a very big difference. To protect the right to life. There could be a situation where there is a federal law that invalidates what Iowa has done. That would be totally inappropriate and not something we can support.”
Trump also said, “What Gov. Reynolds (R) did here in Iowa to protect the heartbeat, he said it was a terrible, terrible thing.”
