Trump's $2 Billion Harvard Funding Freeze Overturned by Judge Appointed by Obama

Judge Rules Against Trump Administration’s Funding Freeze on Harvard

A federal judge recently determined that the Trump administration’s decision to block federal funds to Harvard was unconstitutional. The administration had removed over $2 billion from Ivy League schools, claiming they weren’t doing enough to combat anti-Semitism and were improperly employing racial preferences in their diversity initiatives.

Judge Allison D. Burrows concluded that the government’s actions infringed upon Harvard’s free speech rights. She noted that the university was already taking steps to address the concerns raised. The judge acknowledged the necessity to combat anti-Semitism but emphasized the importance of preserving free speech rights. She expressed that while the fight against hate is crucial, it shouldn’t come at the cost of these fundamental rights.

Neither Harvard nor the White House responded immediately to inquiries about the ruling.

For months, Harvard and the administration faced off without reaching a resolution. In April, Harvard publicly stated that it would not yield to the government’s pressures, citing fears over academic freedom. Although the administration seemed open to dialogue, reports suggested that Harvard intended to seek victory through the legal system.

The ruling also implied that Harvard needed to bolster its actions against anti-Semitism, even if those actions were coming a bit late. The judge underscored that upholding the First Amendment and protecting free speech is essential to democracy. Interestingly, this ruling came from a judge who previously supported Harvard’s controversial admissions policies but found the Trump administration’s attempts to hold Harvard accountable problematic.
