Trump’s Crackdown on Crime in DC Results in Nearly 2,000 Arrests
Since August 7th, President Donald Trump’s initiative targeting crime in Washington, D.C., has resulted in 1,914 arrests. Notably, on Thursday night, authorities apprehended several individuals linked to terrorist watch lists, many of whom were illegal immigrants connected to firearms incidents on school property.
The operation involved hundreds of personnel from the National Guard, the Metropolitan Police Department, and various federal agencies, including the FBI and the DEA. Coordinated efforts began as part of Trump’s plan to reduce crime in the capital.
On Thursday evening alone, law enforcement arrested 73 people. Among those were illegal immigrants from El Salvador who appeared on terrorist watch lists, as well as individuals from Colombia affiliated with the criminal gang Florencia 13, known for drug trafficking. Arrests also included individuals facing serious charges such as attempted murder and armed assault. An illegal immigrant from Bolivia had a history of domestic violence and felony assault.
Additionally, one unidentified person was arrested for unlawfully carrying a firearm, a situation that tied back to an abandoned gun found at a school earlier this month.
Law enforcement has been actively rescuing children reported missing during this period, with six recoveries attributed to the ongoing crime crackdown.
White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers commented on the situation, noting that Trump’s actions have eliminated dangerous criminals from D.C.’s streets, asserting that his policies have restored order and accountability.
As of now, there have been 17 arrests related to violent gang rapes, including members of MS-13 and Tren de Aragua. Furthermore, authorities have seized 198 firearms and cleared 50 homeless encampments throughout the city.
In response to rising crime rates, which escalated sharply starting in 2020, Trump took measures to federalize local police forces in D.C. This shift, enacted on August 11, aimed to provide more robust governance and law enforcement resources.
Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll extended the National Guard’s presence in D.C. until November 30th, stating that this support is crucial for restoring law and order.
Despite these efforts, local leaders voiced concerns, suggesting that such crackdowns are unnecessary. They argue that Trump’s approach comes across as authoritarian and that crime levels have started to decline organically.
This sentiment was echoed by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, who criticized Trump’s actions as overreaching and unconstitutional.
