Trump’s Administration Creates Its Own Media Using Memes and Influencers

Alternative Media Tactics in the White House

In a shift towards alternative media narratives, the White House is adopting creative strategies, ranging from influencer-only briefings to memes that portray Donald Trump as both the Pope and a Jedi master from “Star Wars.”

Since returning to office in January, President Trump’s team has increasingly prioritized right-wing media in an effort to escalate hostilities with traditional news outlets. Recently, they’ve ramped up efforts by holding exclusive briefings aimed at boosting loyalty among Trump’s base.

Last week, White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt conducted three briefings specifically for selected partisan media channels, moving these sessions into a separate auditorium, creating a stark division between traditional press access and this new setup.

During an April 30 briefing, Levitt expressed agreement with a question from right-wing activist Jacques Posoviek, which is somewhat unusual for interactions at the podium, where typically more formal discourse takes place.

Another inquiry came from Don Roule, a supporter of conspiracy theories, asking if figures like Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton would face investigation. The White House has yet to clarify its communication strategy regarding these developments.

Creating an Echo Chamber

Since his initial presidency, Trump has been adept in using social media to engage with followers. Now, as he campaigns for 2024, this engagement strategy seems to be central to his administration’s communications.

A report from Axios suggests that Trump’s White House is now a prime player in right-wing media. Sonia Gipson Rankin, a law professor, warned that this approach could foster an “echo chamber,” where alternative narratives proliferate, distancing governance from reality.

Last week, “White House Wire” emerged—an online platform mirroring a low-tech version of the Drudge Report, featuring stories and links to the administration’s social media, further promoting a specific narrative.

Amidst this media environment, access to mainstream news sources seems to be shrinking. For instance, the Associated Press encountered pushback when it refused to rename the Gulf of Mexico to President Trump’s preferred “Gulf of America.”

Provocative Memes and Controversies

The administration is also leaning into the creation of provocative memes to energize Trump’s supporters. Recently, Trump’s social media shared an AI-generated image of him wearing a Pope suit shortly after attending a funeral for Pope Francis. Although Trump claimed he didn’t post the meme, Melania called it “cute.”

At a press briefing, Trump remarked about the reactions to the image, implying that critics don’t appreciate humor. The day after, his official account released a meme picturing him as a muscular figure wielding a lightsaber in honor of May the 4th, a day celebrated by “Star Wars” fans.

In a narrative twist, a post compared Trump’s leftist opponents to the dark forces of the Galactic Empire, suggesting that they are akin to figures like Darth Vader. However, the media noted a significant detail: his red lightsaber symbolically associates him with the dark side of the Force.
