New Jersey Gubernatorial Race Heats Up
Secaucus, New Jersey – Democratic candidate Rep. Mikie Sherrill is highlighting a major issue caused by President Donald Trump in the ongoing gubernatorial race in New Jersey, which is known for its competitiveness.
As Election Day approaches, with less than three weeks to go, the president’s recent decision to revoke billions in federal funding for the Gateway project—a key initiative to construct a new rail tunnel between New Jersey and New York—has significantly impacted the campaign.
Sherrill held a press conference at a busy commuter rail station, close to the tunnel site, emphasizing the project’s immense importance for both the U.S. economy and daily commuters. She pointed out that without the necessary improvements, many would miss family dinners, sports events, and other personal commitments.
She expressed concern about the president’s actions, stating, “This tunnel project could create nearly 100,000 jobs in the area, and any delays could cost us $1 million daily.”
Sherrill also criticized her opponent, Republican Jack Ciattarelli, who is supported by Trump in this bid to succeed the term-limited Democratic Governor Phil Murphy. “I’m advocating for the people of New Jersey, while he’s busy making excuses for Trump. That’s unacceptable,” she remarked.
The Gateway project has faced scrutiny since the Trump administration froze funding for it and another subway project just after a federal shutdown. This latest news adds to the pressure as Republicans continue to point fingers at Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for the shutdown.
In response to the funding cancellation, Trump commented, “The New York project has been canceled,” attributing blame to Schumer’s past actions.
Ciattarelli later expressed on social media the need for a governor who can stand with Trump when advantageous while also pushing for New Jersey’s interests, including the Gateway Tunnel project. “I will advocate fiercely for this important infrastructure,” he claimed.
During a press conference, when asked about Ciattarelli’s statements, Sherrill responded, “That’s rich, isn’t it? A guy who has made excuses for everything now claims he’s going to fight for us. How exactly? He’s not even here today to back that up.”
In past debates, Sherrill has continued to assert that Ciattarelli shows no intent to confront Trump, as she referred to Trump calling Ciattarelli “100% MAGA.”
Ciattarelli, when asked if he aligns with the MAGA movement, stated he’s focused on “the New Jersey movement.” He described Trump’s performance positively, suggesting an “A” grade, which Sherrill responded to with criticism, particularly noting the high cost of living in New Jersey.
The New Jersey gubernatorial race, while outside of Trump’s direct control, is attracting considerable attention. Although Democrats have generally dominated in state elections, Republicans have recently shown competitiveness, winning five out of the last ten elections.
Trump’s support might be crucial for Ciattarelli as he seeks to secure the governorship for the third time, having narrowly lost to Murphy in the previous election.
Ciattarelli believes that many in New Jersey are pleased with Trump’s decisions, highlighting various initiatives such as a moratorium on wind farms and tax breaks. Earlier this year, Trump endorsed Ciattarelli and even participated in a conference call advocating for his campaign ahead of the upcoming primary.
