Trump’s choice for surgeon general divides MAGA and MAHA supporters.

Trump’s Surgeons General Nomination Causes Rifts Within MAGA Movement

President Trump has nominated Casey to serve as the surgeon general, a choice that puts part of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement in opposition to the Make America Healthy (Maha) faction, creating divisions among his supporters.

This nomination was influenced by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., leading to criticism from various vocal allies within Trump’s base, which highlights Trump’s inclusiveness of Kennedy’s perspectives.

“Bobby thought she was really great. I don’t know her,” Trump said last week, reflecting on how he responded to questions about Casey after withdrawing his initial nominee, Janet Neshwatt. “I listened to Bobby’s recommendation. I met her yesterday. She’s a very good person. She’s actually a great scholar. That’s why I think she’s great.”

However, some of Trump’s supporters are not entirely convinced by this choice.

Laura Rumer, a staunch Trump ally, has publicly criticized Casey’s qualifications, even comparing her to Elizabeth Holmes of the Theranos scandal on social media. She is often seen as a supporter who has Trump’s ear, having met with him recently to discuss concerns regarding the National Security Council.

Other Trump supporters have also voiced doubts about Casey’s background and her suitability for the role. While the surgeon general’s influence on policy is limited, the position is significant for public health communication.

Casey’s absence from an active medical license and her past as a surgical resident align with trends in former surgeon generals. She has co-founded a company focused on health technology and has authored works promoting healthier lifestyles while expressing doubts about vaccines, embodying the Maha movement’s spirit.

Maha leaders, including Kennedy and Casey’s brother Carrie, have defended the nomination, arguing that Casey’s departure from traditional health systems aligns with their goals.

Calley Means, a figure close to Loomer, has pointed out that some pro-Trump activists might be financially incentivized to support “President Trump’s agenda” by industry interests. Rumer responded on social media to Carrie’s support for Casey, questioning its validity.

The contention surrounding the surgeon general nomination reflects Trump’s embrace of Kennedy and the Maha movement, indicating a broader coalition.

Trump’s Complex Approach to Legislation

Trump’s public statements and social media comments on a key settlement bill reveal a reluctance to make definitive choices regarding complex legislation.

Initially, Trump favored a comprehensive bill but later opted to separate his agenda into two distinct pieces. Recently, he’s been grappling with the idea of increasing taxes on the wealthy to fund the law while assuaging conservative concerns about debt.

Though Trump has indicated a personal acceptance of this plan, he also warns about the associated political risks.

His vague responses occasionally complicate Republican leaders’ efforts to navigate between more moderate and conservative lawmakers.

Despite his public image, Trump’s behind-the-scenes maneuvers include coordinating closely with GOP leaders and reaching out to hesitant members of Congress.

White House officials noted that Trump frequently communicates with key figures like Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Senate Majority Leader John Tune (R-Idaho) while regularly hosting Republican lawmakers.

As legislation moves toward completion in the next few weeks, sources expect Trump’s engagement to intensify.

“His outreach and involvement in Congress are crucial,” White House officials told Hill.

As Trump prepares for a trip to the Middle East, there are unresolved issues among Republicans regarding state and local tax deductions and potential Medicaid cuts.

“When we return from the Middle East where great things happen in America, we will work together on all the open issues, but there shouldn’t be a lot. The bill is great,” Trump remarked.
