Trump's close associates worry about the pardon of a Chinese 'dissident' who took $1.3 billion.

Pardon Controversy Surrounds Chinese Businessman Miles Guo

Reports suggest that insiders from the Trump administration are attempting to block a potential pardon for Miles Guo, a man accused of fraud. If Trump grants the pardon, Guo may regain access to over $1.3 billion in funds he allegedly stole.

Guo, who claims to be an anti-communist dissident, is set to face sentencing in New York on January 20. A federal judge is likely to impose prison time and order the forfeiture of his assets. This comes after a jury found out in July that Guo made his fortune through fraudulent activities, all while maintaining ties with some of Trump’s allies.

Some officials are worried that Trump might be influenced by claims of persecution from Guo, reminiscent of the way the Biden administration has reportedly helped other businessmen and politicians since Trump took office.

After fleeing China in 2014 amid allegations of corruption, Guo quickly established a new business empire in the U.S. His wealth predominantly comes from support by Chinese exiles who rally behind his cause to oppose the Chinese government.

However, instead of using his funds for noble causes, Guo has splurged on luxury items—think expensive cars, a mansion, and a yacht. His purchases include a $900,000 Lamborghini and a $37 million yacht in Connecticut.

One notable connection Guo has is with Steve Bannon, Trump’s former chief strategist. Bannon was once arrested on Guo’s yacht and later pardoned by Trump for charges related to fundraising for a border wall.

Concerns have arisen about Guo’s links to the Chinese government, especially after an incident where his penthouse caught fire during an FBI raid last year.

Some insiders believe Guo deserves punishment rather than leniency. For example, one source stated that Guo was convicted of stealing from victims who thought he was a dissident. There’s also skepticism about the motives of anyone pushing for his pardon.

Critics describe Guo as an opportunist, expressing doubts about his presence at the White House. He was found guilty last July on multiple charges, including fraud and money laundering, leading to the seizure of assets worth over $630 million following his arrest this year.

Despite his controversies, Guo has financially supported conservative efforts and even produced music for Bannon’s podcast, a key platform for Republicans.

A lawyer advocating for Trump’s pardons remarked that the final say on such decisions ultimately rests with the president, bypassing the Justice Department’s processes.

Victims of Guo’s alleged fraud are understandably alarmed at the possibility of a pardon. Le Zhou, a Florida real estate agent, recounted how he and his wife sold their belongings to invest in Guo’s ventures, only to feel betrayed. He articulated the emotional and financial toll this has taken on them.

Zhou noted, “A pardon would be shocking,” emphasizing the impact Guo’s actions have had on many people’s lives.

Experts suggest that a pardon could complicate the recovery of funds for Guo’s victims, as it might block the government’s ability to seize his tainted assets. A co-conspirator in the fraud case recently received a significant prison sentence and forfeited assets worth $1.4 billion, which raises further questions about restitution for victims.

Ultimately, Guo’s turbulent history and questionable alliances have thrown his claims of being a dissident into doubt among some in his community. There’s lingering suspicion, albeit without concrete evidence, about his connections to Chinese intelligence.

A White House representative remarked that the administration doesn’t disclose details about potential pardons, reinforcing that the president has the final decision. Guo’s legal team has yet to respond to requests for comments on the situation.
