Security Measures for President Trump’s Flight
A senior official from the Trump administration revealed that the “decoy” Air Force One, used to transport President Trump, was escorted by U.S. fighter jets on its way to Britain. This information, shared on Wednesday, raised concerns about the safety of the press and staff who accompanied Trump as they faced perceived threats during his departure from Ankara, Turkey, last month.
These newly disclosed security protocols added a layer of complexity to the unusual flight arrangements, where a plane usually tied to Trump took off for Britain without him onboard. Reporters were informed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent were aboard the “decoy” flight, accompanied by U.S. fighter jets—although President Trump himself was not present, according to the official.
Members of the traveling press were instructed to keep their window shades closed throughout the flight to shield them from seeing the escorting jets. Despite this, there seemed to be no visible signs of anything out of the ordinary at the airport. The press was positioned at the rear of the convoy, and photographers reported not seeing Trump board from his usual spot under the wing.
Once on board, reporters still had to keep their shades down. A report mentioned that Secret Service agents reiterated these instructions after entering the press area, prompting some quick adjustments when a photographer briefly opened the shades.
A White House official stated that the order to keep windows covered came directly from the Secret Service. President Trump later commented that the changes to the aircraft were implemented at the direction of national security and military officials. “Well, that’s up to the Secret Service,” he noted, emphasizing his commitment to following their directives.
During a visit to Ohio, Trump explained how the decision was made to switch planes, affirming, “They wanted me to be on a different flight… with the same level of safety.” He hinted that the flight he was initially on may have been more at risk, suggesting possibly heightened danger on that journey as it was likely to be targeted.
