U.S. Education Department Cancels Fine Against Grand Canyon University
The U.S. Department of Education has lifted a substantial fine against Grand Canyon University (GCU), the largest Christian university in the nation. This fine was initially imposed by the Biden administration in 2023.
On Friday, the proposed fine of $37.7 million was rescinded. Reports indicate that this decision was announced on Monday.
The initial fine raised concerns, suggesting that the Biden administration might have been targeting Christian universities unfairly. The lawsuit related to this fine was dismissed on grounds of bias and cannot be reopened.
This decision, along with the termination of the lawsuit, occurred during the Trump administration.
In a statement released on Friday, GCU expressed that it was acquitted of any wrongdoing:
According to the provisions from the hearing and the dismissal order, the department determined that no investigations, fines, or penalties would be levied against GCU. They confirmed that GCU had not violated Title IV requirements, including the accusation that the university significantly misrepresented the costs of doctoral programs. The statement emphasized, “No findings have been made against GCU or its staff, and no fines have been imposed.”
When the fine was first announced, GCU officials characterized the accusations as deceptive. They maintained that the claims were baseless, as noted by the Associated Press.
“Grand Canyon University firmly denies all allegations presented by the Department of Education and will take the necessary actions to defend itself against these accusations,” the institution stated in a detailed response.
There was a study that suggested GCU misled over 7,500 students regarding the costs involved in a doctoral program.
In comments made to a spokesperson for a news outlet, the approach of different administrations towards educational institutions was compared.
“Unlike previous administrations, we do not target universities based on their religious affiliations. The Trump administration is committed to holding higher education institutions accountable based on factual evidence, not political bias, in order to serve students better,” the spokesperson stated.
In 2024, a survey indicated that the Biden-Harris administration appeared to target faith-based universities while overlooking Ivy League institutions, according to reports.
After the fine was rescinded, GCU president Brian Mueller noted, “The facts clearly support our assertion that we were wrongly accused of misleading doctoral students, and we appreciate this recognition of the lack of merit in those allegations.”
