Luigi Mangione He appeared in federal court on Friday afternoon and was arrested on federal charges after the Justice Department allegedly assassinated United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Ministry of Justice He has obtained indictment against Mangione in the Southern District of New York. Mangion was charged with the murder of Stalking and Thompson, as well as electronic communications, interstate travel and firearm use, while he allegedly murdered the CEO of Healthcare Insurance on December 4, 2024.

If a 26-year-old is convicted of murder for using a firearm, Mangion could face the death penalty, as indicated in the court application.

In December, then-President Donald Trump indicated that he would direct the Justice Department to resume the use of the death penalty for the most violent criminals.

“As soon as I take office, I will instruct the Department of Justice to urge the death penalty to protect American families and children from violent rapists, murderers and monsters,” Trump said.

Attorney General Pam Bondy announced on April 1st. Instagram posts That her Department of Justice is seeking the death penalty.

Mangion’s lawyers are in trouble with Bondy’s announcement, claiming that the government violated the client’s due process rights by commenting on pending criminal cases outside the court. His lawyers are trying to eliminate the death penalty in a federal case.

Thompson, who lived in Minnesota, was in New York City for a public shareholders meeting. Previous federal complaints allege Mangion traveled from Atlanta to New York City by bus and arrived at the Port Authority bus terminal in Manhattan on November 24, 2024.

He was arrested at McDonald’s, Pennsylvania, and prosecutors retrieved a notebook full of books that he claimed to portray a calculated assassination attempt in addition to “ghost guns.”

Mangion also faces federal accusations, as well as in New York and Pennsylvania. He pleads not guilty to all charges.
