Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff meets with Putin amid sanctions concern

Witkov’s Visit to Moscow for Peace Talks

President Donald Trump has successfully brokered a peace deal, bringing an end to a three-and-a-half-year conflict in Ukraine. In light of this, White House envoy Steve Witkov arrived in Russia on Wednesday for his fifth meeting with President Vladimir Putin.

Yuri Ushakov, a Russian foreign policy adviser, stated that the lengthy three-hour conversation primarily focused on methods to secure this peace agreement and possibly avoid impending sanctions from Trump. However, he didn’t provide specific details on the discussions.

Ushakov mentioned that Putin “received some signals from Trump” and “sent a few signals” in return, but, again, there were no specifics shared.

There was some talk about establishing a “strategic partnership” between the U.S. and Russia during the meeting, though concrete steps were not outlined. Prior to their meeting, Witkov was spotted taking a stroll near the Kremlin with Kiril Dmitriev, an envoy for investment and economic cooperation.

The meeting took place around noon, and Ushakov appeared to confirm the cordial atmosphere, as he smiled and exchanged handshakes with both leaders. Nonetheless, Witkov’s team remains tight-lipped about the precise goals for the encounter, though there are indications they aim to negotiate a pause in air attacks.

Witkov’s trip to Moscow appears to be a last-ditch effort to persuade Putin to halt his military ambitions. Expectations were low for any significant concessions from the Kremlin. Just weeks ago, Trump had stated that he would impose strict tariffs on Russia if no agreement was reached with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Trump referred to potential tariffs that could reach 100%, calling them secondary tariffs. The deadline for an agreement was pushed to just before the end of July, further increasing pressure on the situation.

However, Trump has recently backtracked somewhat on those threats, suggesting that he never specified the tariff percentage. As he put it, “We’ll see what happens in the next fairly short period.” Responding to a reporter’s query about the meeting, he mentioned the upcoming talks with Russia would be crucial.

Interestingly, these tariffs primarily target countries like China and India, major importers of Russian oil. Both nations are significant trade partners for the U.S., which complicates the trade dynamics as high tariffs could lead to increased consumer prices in the U.S.
