Trump’s ‘Great Big Bill’ Cuts Funding for Medicaid-Covered Transgender Surgery

Trump’s New Budget Targets Medicaid Transgender Surgery

President Donald Trump has put forth a comprehensive budget proposal, which he charmingly referred to as “one big, beautiful bill,” aimed at funding Medicaid for transgender surgeries.

This budget, recently passed by a narrow margin in the House with a vote of 215-214-1, initially sought to prevent Medicaid from covering “gender transition procedures” for minors. However, as of later Wednesday, alterations were made to refine the language involving terms like “minor” and “under 18.”

The treatments that will no longer be covered include puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and surgeries related to gender transition.

A recent study from gynecologists at institutions such as Columbia University and the University of Southern California revealed that an impressive 25% of what are termed “gender-affirming” surgeries in the United States are financed through Medicaid.

From the data, it was noted that out of 48,019 patients undergoing these procedures, more than 12,000 were Medicaid recipients.

Terry Schilling, the president of the American Principles Project, celebrated this legislative move as a “big victory.” He also pointed to low public approval ratings for taxpayer-funded gender transition surgeries.

In response to the budget, transgender comedian Stacey Kay described the initiative as “an attempt at genocide.”
